CCCJ Symposium sets stage for Canada-Japan EPA

The above is a brief documentary video encapsulating the CCCJ EPA Symposium held on November 2, 2012 in Tokyo. 

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Japan (CCCJ), with the support of the Keidanren and the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CCC), on 2 November hosted a high-level symposium regarding the proposed Canada-Japan Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA). The event was the first private sector conversation aimed at achieving an EPA tailored to the extent possible to the needs of the business communities of Canada and Japan.

With negotiations between the two governments to commence 26 November, the Symposium gathered key Canadian and Japanese stakeholders from the private sector for engaged discussion on pertinent issues and strategies to achieve a successful bilateral agreement. 

Key note speakers of the event were the Honourable Perrin Beatty, President and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce as well as Yorizumi Watanabe, Professor, International Political Economy, Keio University, who is a leading proponent of free trade. 

Panelists included representatives from the Canadian Federation of AgricultureJapan’s Central Union of Agricultural Co-operatives (JA-Zenchu)Canada Wood GroupNational Federation on Forest Owners Cooperative AssociationAutomotive Parts Manufacturers’ Association,  Japan Automobile Manufacturers’ Association(JAMA) and Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC). The discussions were moderated by Japan’s former Ambassador to Canada and Chairman of the CCCJ’s Honorary Board of Advisors Sadaaki Numata and Charles McMillan, Professor of Strategic Management and International Business at York University’s Schulich School of Business and a former senior policy adviser to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney.

在日カナダ商工会議所は、11月2日、経団連およびカナダ商工会議所(CCC)の協力を得て、日加経済連携協定(EPA)に関するハイレベルなシンポジウムを開催し、カナダおよび日本の経済界のニーズを満たす EPA について民間団体として初めての話し合いを行いました。

両国政府が EPA 交渉を開始する11月26日に先立ち、日加両国の主要な民間セクターの関係者が実りある協定の締結に向けての課題および戦略について議論しました。


またパネリストとして、カナダ農業者連盟、全国農業協同組合中央会(JA 全中)、カナダウッドグループ、全国森林組合連合会、自動車部品製造業者協会、日本自動車工業会(JAMA)、石油天然ガス・金属鉱物資源機構の各代表のご参加をいただきました。司会は、元駐カナダ特命全権大使・CCCJ 名誉顧問会長沼田貞昭氏と、元ブライアン・マルロニー首相政策顧問・現ヨーク大学・シュリック校教授(経営戦略、国家経済政策)チャールズ・マクミラン氏が務めました。
