July 1st is Canada's 145th birthday. Come join the CCCJ in kicking off the Canada Day weekend at our most Canadian event of the year. Immediately following the AGM, Members and their guests are encouraged to walk over to Cafe 246 to enjoy a fine selection of foods and drinks, while taking in as much Canadiana we can squeeze into a two-hour period!

The Women in Business Committee welcomes the distinguished Ms. Susan Roos, employment attorney and wife of U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos, for what promises to be a thought-provoking address on the challenges women face in the global workplace.

The 2012 CCCJ Board of Governors Election is well underway. To bring Candidates and Members together face-to-face, the CCCJ is organizing a Town Hall Meeting next Wednesday, June 13th. First, all Members are invited to take in the CCCJ management in action by attending the Monthly Board and Committee Meeting held at TMI Associates 23rd Floor from 6:00 to 7:30pm.

As part of the their Asia-Pacific Tour, Award-winning, Toronto-based Jazz composer Darren Sigesmund and his sextet will perform at a special CCCJ-Joint Chamber Event on June 5th at Oakwood Premier Tokyo Midtown. This sextet has won awards, including at the world-renowned Montreal Jazz Festival. Event flyer

Fiscal year 2011 seems to have been the year of corporate scandals and governance mishaps in Japan. Olympus, Daio Paper, AIJ, Kyushu Electric, others....you name the type of scandal, it may well have occurred in 2011. As a result, policymakers have voiced serious concern about the need to improve corporate governance because "foreign money is deserting the market".

During the past 12 months, a great deal of progress has been made in terms of relieving people's immediate needs, yet years of reconstruction stretch ahead in Tohoku. And while the Government of Japan is of necessity first addressing major infrastructural needs, the view from the region's cities and towns is understandably more focused on the minutiae of repairing the social fabric of communities that have literally been torn asunder.
