After Olympus....What Do Foreign Investors Want Most From Japanese Companies?

With Japan representing the world's 3rd largest economy and being home to some of the most globally successful companies, the country has for a number of years been of top interest for many foreign investors. However, as of late and most recently due to a number of highly publicized corporate scandals, there has been some concern in regards to foreign investment leaving the Japanese market.

On Monday, May 28th, roughly 100 professionals gathered at TMI Associates in Roppongi Hills to participate in a discussion with experienced representatives and advisors of foreign portfolio investments in Japan. The CCCJ and The Board of Director Training Institute of Japan (BDTI) gathered these panelists to clarify the possible reasons for the recent outflow of foreign investment from Japan as well as to discuss some possible solutions.

Topics included the main concerns of foreign investors and what Japanese managers should do in regards to general management methods and the corporate governance of companies to increase investment returns. Following the panel discussion, attendees had a chance to interact with the panelists in a Q&A session. We’d like to express our gratitude to BDTI for their great support in arranging this discussion as well as to the panelists who participated. We look forward to round 2 - coming soon!
