Experience a Historic Japanese Tradition: Join the Ito Matsubara Hachiman Shrine Mikoshi Procession in the Izu Peninsula

The CCCJ is pleased to share a unique opportunity for our members and non-members alike to take part in one of Izu Peninsula's most historic autumn traditions as a part of our CSR endeavour: the Ito Matsubara Hachimangu Shrine Autumn Grand Festival.

The shrine is seeking volunteers to participate as mikoshi bearers (担ぎ手) and procession attendants (先供) during this important cultural event.

Dating back over 870 years, Ito Matsubara Hachimangu Shrine was founded in 1154 by Ito Suketsugu, the third-generation head of the Ito family. The tradition of the mikoshi procession has continued for nearly 500 years, with the famous ocean procession (海上渡御) becoming a beloved symbol of Ito City’s autumn celebrations.

The local aging population is posing some challenges for the festival, especially to carry the mikoshi. Participating in the mikoshi procession is not only a way to support the local community, but also a rare opportunity to experience and help preserve a living piece of Japanese cultural heritage.
