Jim Zhang
Candidate for Governor

With over 15 years of deep roots in Japan—including my upbringing in Kagawa Prefecture and my professional journey—I am honored to run for the Board of Governors of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Japan (CCCJ). As Executive Director from 2016-2019, I led the Chamber through a period of unprecedented growth and revitalization: delivering a 43% revenue increase, expanding membership, and securing the Chamber’s financial future by transitioning it from instability to long-term flexibility. Under my leadership, we successfully organized over 100 events, including high-profile gatherings such as multiple Maple Leaf Galas, fostering stronger networks between Canadian and Japanese business leaders. I also restarted key committee activities, re-engaging members and amplifying the Chamber’s voice in critical sectors. My team’s publication of the Canada-Japan Investment Guide became a cornerstone resource for bilateral trade, and I proudly represented the CCCJ at official and industry events, elevating its profile.
Prior to this role, my experience at the Embassy of Canada to Japan honed my diplomatic and strategic policy skills. Over the past five years, as a market entry and business development consultant for high-growth startups in Singapore, Indonesia, and Taipei, I’ve guided innovative companies through Asia’s complex markets—expertise I will leverage to support the CCCJ’s next chapter.
Now, at a time of global economic and geopolitical uncertainty, the Canada-Japan relationship is more critical than ever. If elected, I will use my on-the-ground experience, network, and strategic vision to identify emerging opportunities, connect key partners, and ensure the Chamber plays a leading role in reinforcing this vital partnership. As a proud Albertan from Edmonton with a uniquely blended Canadian-Japanese perspective, I am committed to making the CCCJ a dynamic, resilient, and indispensable bridge between our two nations.
