Christian Orton

Candidate for Governor

I’m a Canadian legal professional and advocate for international business in Japan, currently serving as Counsel in the Tokyo office of the international law firm Watson Farley & Williams. I grew up in Ontario and spent significant periods living in Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto, between extended stays living and working in Japan.

With over 25 years of experience in Canada–Japan relations, I was previously a member of the Toronto Japanese Association of Commerce and Industry and participated in a range of international business initiatives between Canada and Japan before relocating back to Japan in 2018. Since moving to Tokyo, I have been actively involved with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Japan (CCCJ).

Professionally, I advise international companies and institutions on cross-border commercial and financing transactions, regulatory matters, and strategic investments, with a particular focus on the energy, infrastructure, and transportation sectors. This experience has given me a deep appreciation of the challenges and opportunities Canadian businesses face when operating in Japan, as well as insights that can support Japanese businesses in building relationships in Canada. I believe this perspective aligns closely with the CCCJ’s mission and enables me to contribute meaningfully to its efforts to support members, foster bilateral ties, and promote a dynamic, globally engaged Canadian business community in Japan.

Since 2022, I have worked with the CCCJ Energy Committee, helping to organize and facilitate the Net Zero Forum seminar series. In June 2024, I was appointed Chair of the Energy Committee and have since worked closely with the executive team to expand the committee’s activities, grow its membership, and strengthen its reach within the business community. Outside of work, I’m a community-minded individual who mentors young professionals and participates in cultural exchange events, helping to reinforce the social fabric of the Canadian business community in Tokyo.

My candidacy for Governor of the CCCJ reflects my ongoing commitment to the Canada–Japan business relationship and the broader bilateral community. I will approach this role with a collaborative mindset and bring a governance philosophy grounded in strategic vision, inclusivity, and results-driven leadership.
