DMZ was founded in 2010 at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), an institution known for innovation and boundary-pushing education. DMZ now supports a diverse, global community of entrepreneurs and ecosystem builders—from students to seasoned founders.  Tokyo office (DMZ Japan) was launched in 2025 to serve as a bridge for Japanese entrepreneurs expanding into global markets, especially Canada, while also offering a base for international startups to enter the Japanese market.
