Canadian Coach of Sakura Fifteen prepares for Rugby World Cup with test matches vs. South Africa and Ireland

The Japanese Women’s National Rugby Team, the Sakura Fifteen, has been led by Canadian head coach, Lesley Mackenzie since 2019. They are now gearing up for the World Cup. The first test match vs. South Africa will be played at the iconic Kamaishi Unosumai Memorial Stadium on Saturday, July 24. The series will be the first time the Sakura Fifteen has played in Japan since the Women’s Asia Rugby Championship in July 2017.

In the 2019 men’s Rugby World Cup, the Canadian National Team was supposed to play a match vs. Namibia at the Kamaishi Unosumai Memorial Stadium but the game was cancelled due to a typhoon. Canada was able to win a lot of respect in Japan and around the world as many members of the team helped people in Kamaishi clean up their mud covered streets and houses. Let’s hope Leslie can channel some of this Canadian goodwill and her experience as a former Team Canada World Cup player to the Sakura Fifteen test match on July 24th!
