[Event Report] Hyper LPG Truck Launch Seminar

Daruma Energy Hyper LPG Truck Launch

CCCJ member, Daruma Energy, in conjunction with Joto Garage received a grant from METI to launch Japan’s first domestically developed dual fuel truck, Hyper LPG Truck. This truck is powered by a mixture of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and diesel fuels. This engine system can decrease diesel consumption by 50%, leading to about a 20% decrease in total fuel costs. Furthermore, it can travel almost twice the distance compared to its original diesel version. If the truck runs out of LPG in its dual-fuel mode, it can be manually switched back to its original diesel-only system and continue to operate as a mono-fuel vehicle. Another advantage is its surprisingly high power. The engineers discovered that mixing the fuels increased the engine torque to a point at which the engine can be damaged. To ensure an unbreakable truck, they reduced the torque so that it matches the durability levels recommended by the manufacturer. This truck meets all vehicle and emissions standards set by the Japanese government, while it is also seen as meeting the needs of companies' Business Continuity Plan in a time of crisis.

This truck was exhibited at Ohji Driving School (Kita-ku) on February 2nd in which Tom O’Sullivan (Mathyos), Makoto Arahata (LPG Center) and Wilf Wakely (CCCJ) were invited as guest speakers to speak about the current energy and logistics situation in Japan. After the seminar, participants were able to test drive the truck. CCCJ Chair, Wilf Wakely said, “CCCJ is supporting Japanese technologies such as this truck, in order to create new markets that call for an increased demand in Canadian energy resources.”
