SAMUEL GILDART

Chiba University of Commerce, Associate Professor

1. Name:  Samuel Gideon Gildart

2. Position / Business: Associate Professor of International Management at the Chiba University of Commerce — a private university located in Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture.  The university excels in bookkeeping and accounting education, as well as its focus on environmental and energy initiatives.

3. Why I want to serve as Governor: I have lived in Japan for 33 years.  The first eight of those were in the Tohoku region, while the rest of the time I have been living in Yokohama.  Therefore, I am very familiar with both Japan’s capital region and the potential that lies in her regional areas.  I have been a member of the CCCJ since April 2001 and believe now is the time for me to play a more active role in the chamber.  I want to serve as Governor by promoting the CCCJ within Japan’s academic community and beyond, expanding membership and propose a student category to the CCCJ membership profile.

4. Previous CCCJ involvement: I have written a few articles for the CCCJ magazine “The Canadian.”

5. Proudest accomplishment as a volunteer: I have not formally served as a volunteer, however, I once transcribed Mr. Ian Burney’s speech on Canada-Japan trade in 2014.

6. Ideas and plans for the CCCJ:

  1. Promote the CCCJ in Japan’s academic community — give presentations about Canada’s business and economic interests at conferences within Japan and outside Japan, particularly in the ASEAN region.
  2. Grow membership in the academic community and beyond — enlist and include current and former students to join and participate in CCCJ events.  Establish a student category for CCCJ membership.
  3. Promote the CCCJ — contribute articles to the “The Canadian” and think of ways to promote the chamber’s interests in near and far including Atlantic Canada, where I am from.
