Mackenzie Clugston was appointed Professor as well as Rector of the Cross-Cultural College at Kwansei Gakuin University in September 2016 following his retirement from the Canadian Foreign Service in May 2016.  In addition to his academic duties, Clugston is also an external board member for Idemitsu Kosan as well as Kameda Seika.

Professor Clugston was Canada's Ambassador to Japan (2012-16). Prior to that, he was Canada's Ambassador to the Republic of Indonesia, the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) from 2009 to 2012. As a diplomat, Professor Clugston had five assignments to Japan, including Canadian Consul General to the Kansai region of Japan in 2000-2003.

Mackenzie Clugston was born in Kobe, Japan, and has spent more than 35 years in Japan.
