E.H. Norman Library Speaker Series

"In McLuhan's Wake: 50 Years of Understanding Media"

The Embassy of Canada's E.H. Norman Library Speaker Series introduces Canada and showcases Canadian perspectives through guest lectures from academics, authors, and artists.

2014 marks 50 years since the publication in 1964 of Canadian visionary Marshall McLuhan's seminal text, Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man. Published in Japanese translation as Media Ron, it has become a classic in its field, still widely read by media scholars. To commemorate this anniversary, the Embassy of Canada will hold a special screening of Kevin McMahon's thought-provoking documentary "McLuhan's Wake". Prior to the screening, McLuhan experts from both Canada and Japan will examine the work of the man regarded as the 'father of communications and media studies', and will also try to find in it insight for our present-day society, where diverse media play such a pervasive role.
