After almost a quarter of a century in post, Ian de Stains is retiring as Executive Director of the BCCJ. Join us for a luncheon designed to celebrate his tenure and to wish him well in his future endeavours.

As a BBC producer-presenter Ian was seconded to NHK in 1976. For four years he worked on radio and television programmes designed to introduce Japan and all things Japanese to the outside world. A number of these programmes were nominated for—and some won—international awards.

Prior to his employment with the BCCJ in 1987, Ian worked independently both as a communications consultant and creative director for a wide variety of clients while continuing his work as a narrator and broadcaster. He was the Japan representative for BBC Television Co-Productions and a bi-lingual newsreader for NHK television. He was also the weekend news editor and presenter for JCTV.  During this period he wrote and narrated the English language series of NTV documentaries on the restoration of the Sistine Chapel.

A Member of the Society of Authors in the UK, Ian is a published writer. The author of a great deal of short fiction, he also published in 2009 the “Business Travellers’ Handbook to Japan”.

Trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, Ian is a firm believer in life-long education, and in 2007 completed a post-graduate diploma in Arbitration Law from Reading University. He is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators.

For years Ian has been a regular speaker at events in the UK (both the Japan Society and chambers of commerce) as well as giving the keynote address for the returning JETs conference in Yokohama. He was the guest speaker at the Chamber’s 3rd British Business Awards having himself received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the inaugural event.
