The Best Wines You’ve Never Heard of: Canadian Wines!

‘Ontario is the least-known great wine zone of the World’ – Matt Kramer, Wine Spectator Magazine

‘Prince Edward County lays claim to being one of the best Chardonnay terroirs in all North America’ – Oz Clarke

'I was amazed’ Stephen Spurrier

‘We have served them Blind to wine professionals with top white Burgundies and, quite literally, amazed and astounded our friends’ – Jancis Robinson

Canadian wines in a range of categories have been taking top prizes at international competitions for decades. Yet limited production and strong domestic demand combine to make these wines extremely hard to get outside the regions where they are produced.

Despite these challenges, Heavenly Vines – Distinctive Canadian Wines (Ebisu), has worked over the past 3 years to make these wines available internationally for the first time here in Japan.

Please join us for a very special evening featuring 10 wineries from Canada for a ‘taste and buy’ event, where you can interact with winery representatives and try more than 30 sparkling, white and red wines from 4 regions, and purchase these wines before they are made available to the general public. Discover why these and other top producers have earned the praise of top wine critics like Jancis Robinson, Stephen Spurrier, Matt Kramer, Stephen Tanzer and Oz Clarke!

Date: Friday, November 15
Time: start - 19:00, open - 18:30

Location: Terrada Wine Cellars (Higashishinagawa 2-6-10 Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo)

Tickets: 8000 yen (includes tastings of all wines and food)

Participating wineries

Ontario
Prince Edward County
Ontario’s newest and most northerly viticulture area located in the northeast corner of Lake Ontario. Summer climate conditions and soils resemble Burgundy, and consequently, the region is quickly gaining international attention for stunning cool-climate sparkling wines, Rieslings, Chardonnays, Pinot Noirs and Cabernet Francs.

Keinte-He Winery & Vineyards
Centrally located in Prince Edward County's wine region, Keint-He produces domestic wines that exhibit European minerality and acidity. The vines are lovingly raised in the limestone rich soils of three distinctive vineyards. Keint-he only focuses on those grape varietals that most effectively showcase the terroir of the region. The result is award-winning, terroir-based wines that reflect the quality and the character of the region in which they were produced.

Niagara
Canada’s largest producer in eastern Canada with a variety of micro- and meso-climates ranging from cool to warmer than the average of Bordeaux, resulting in world-class, award winning wines ranging from sparkling, Riesling, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Bordeaux varieties. More recently, it is also the home to a budding appassimento-style (grape-drying) movement using French grape varieties dried to varying degrees to make white and red wines!

13th Street Winery
Founded in 1998, the original partners specialized in producing small lots of estate grown and handcrafted table and sparkling wines. The winery's resounding success through the first years with hand-crafted traditional method sparkling wines, Gamay, Riesling and Chardonnay ensures these will make up the core of the product line into the future with limited releases of other small batch varietal and blended wines including Pinot Noir, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Meritage wines.
During his tenure at Domaine Laroche in Chablis, 13th Street‘s wine maker Jean-Pierre Colas produced Wine Spectator Magazine's 1998 White Wine of the Year, an award he received for his Domaine Laroche Grand Cru Les Clos 1996. Also in 1998, Jean Pierre was awarded with the Best Wine in the Wine Enthusiast, Grand Cru Chablis Blanchots "Reserve de l'Obedience" 1996 (99 pts). In 2006, Jean-Pierre was named Winemaker of the Year at the Ontario Wine Awards.
Accolades continue to come 13th Street’s way, as Jancis Robinson recently selected the 2006 Grand Cuvee Blanc de Noirs as one of her favourite wines from Canada.

Bachelder Wines
Born in Montreal, Thomas' career began when he started working as a winemaking assistant at various Domaines in Burgundy before studying winemaking with the Viticulture and Oenology program in Beaune.
Intrigued by his homeland's prospering wine industry, Thomas accepted the position of Viniculture Manager at Niagara’s Le Clos Jordanne. Thomas was responsible for managing the winery's exacting viticultural practices and for making the winery's super and ultra-premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. While at Le Clos Jordanne, his chardonnay took top price at the ‘Judgement of Montreal’ beating out top California and Burgundy wines.
Thomas’s wines have received numerous other international accolades, including a top Canadian pick by Jancis Robinson for his Wilmer Vineyard Niagara Chardonnay 2010, and a 6th place ranking in a comparison of North American Chardonnays by the British Magazine ‘the World of Fine Wine’ for the same wine.

Big Head Wines
Big Head Wines is the new virtual, ultra-premium line of appassimento-style (grape drying) wines from Andrzej Lipinski, the man behind the appassimento movement in Niagara. Lipinski makes full, rich wines by drying grapes in tobacco kilns, similar to what they do in Italy’s Valpolicella. All of his wines ferment using wild yeast strains, and state of the art equipment.
The debut Big Head Wines took 5 medals at the recent 2013 Canadian Wine Awards.

Coyote’s Run Estate Winery
In a warm microclimate, Coyote’s Run produces intensely flavoured, lively small-batch wines. The winery recently ranked in the Top 20 at the Canadian Wine Awards, and has twice captured the top prize for Pinot Noir. Of particular interest are the wines from the Red and Black Paw Vineyards, which reflect the unique terroir of the two different soils on the estate.
Jancis Robinson recently also selected their Red Paw Vineyard Pinot Noir 2009 as one of her top Canadian picks.

Pondview Estate Winery
Since 1974, the Puglisi family has grown grapes on their estate located in the Four Mile Creek sub-appellation, one of Niagara’s hottest areas. But after decades of quality grape growing, the family decided to launch their own winery due to the quality of their mature Riesling, Gewurzraminer, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes. This was clearly the right choice, as Pondview has already gathered numerous top wine awards, including a gold medal at the 2013 Canadian Wine Awards for their 2010 Bella Terra Meritage.

Lake Erie North Shore (LENS)
Ontario’s most southerly region with the longest growing season in Canada. Parallel to Northern California, the LENS region actually receives more overall heat units during the growing season than Napa Valley! Expect ripe, fruit-driven wines of good value.

Pelee Island Winery
Founded in 1979, Pelee Island Winery is among Canada’s oldest wineries and occupies the land that has been growing grapes since 1865. With over 600 acres of vineyard on Pelee Island itself, it is also the largest – and the most southerly – estate winery in Canada. Winemaker Martin Janz oversees a very large portfolio of fruit-forward whites, reds and good-value Vinedresser Reserves.

British Columbia
Okanagan Valley
The largest viticultural area of the province, the Okanagan Valley is BC’s premier grape-growing region. An ever-changing panorama, the valley stretches over 250 kilometers, across distinct sub-regions, each with different soil and climate conditions suited to a growing range of varietals. In the north, you’ll find classic cool-climate styles while the southern desert region (yes, this is Canada!) fosters world-class, highly awarded Syrahs and Bordeaux varieties.

Joie Farms – Naramata Bench
Owners Heidi Noble and Michael Dinn chose the name Joie (French for joy) to express the pleasure food and wine have brought to their lives personally and professionally, particularly the styles of Alsace and Burgundy. Accordingly, they specialize in aromatic whites, roses, gamay and pinot noir. Winners of over 80 international medals last year, Heidi and Michael’s wines are extremely hard to find – only in select shops and restaurants in Canada, but we are able to make small volumes available to you here.
Jancis Robinson listed Joie’s PTG (Gamay-Pinot Noir) as one of her favourite Canadian wines.

Church and State - Oliver
Occupying prime vineyards in the Black Sage Bench area of the Okanagan Valley, over the past 5 years Church and State has become renowned for their bold and complex reds and Rhone-style whites and Chardonnay. Not only has the winery’s Syrah been selected as the top red wine of Canada in recent years, they have accumulated an even more impressive set of accolades internationally, including best in class for Chardonnay at the San Francisco International Wine challenge and best in the Bordeaux blend category at the UK Wine and Spirits competition.
Jancis Robinson recently selected Church and State Syrah as one of her top Canadian wines.

Le Vieux Pin - Oliver
Le Vieux Pin takes its inspiration from the finest Rhone Valley wines Syrah and Viognier, Roussanne, Marsanne, while embracing the specific terroir of the famous Black Sage Bench overlooking the valley. The goal at Le Vieux Pin is to make wines that capture the essence of French winemaking tradition, but with the fruit and character of the New World; wines that are elegant and focused, with great intensity of fruit. Though extremely limited in production, these wines have found homes in Top European restaurants and are available in minute quantities here in Japan with us now.
