Military Operations and Business Success

Military Operations and Business Success

In this unique luncheon presentation, Sir Robert Fry will take the Iraq campaign as an initial failed alignment, followed by a re-definition of mission leading to campaign conclusion. This example will then be transferred to business practice.

Lieutenant General Sir Robert Alan Fry KCB, CBE is Chairman of the McKinney Rogers Group of companies. Before joining McKinney Rogers, Sir Robert was Vice President of Hewlett Packard. He remains an advisor to HP and a number of other companies in the defence and banking sectors. He is a member the Royal United Services Institute executive council and a trustee of Help for Heroes. Before business Sir Robert completed a military career which included posts at the highest level of strategic direction and deployed command.

After taking a degree in economics at the University of Bath and working for a period in commerce in New York, his early career was spent largely at regimental and special duties (Mentioned in Despatches, MBE). Attendance at the Army Staff College was followed by tours in the MoD and Directorate of Special Forces, a sequence punctuated in the 1986/7 academic year when he studied for an MA in War Studies at King's College London. In 1989, Sir Robert was appointed COS, HQ 3 Commando Brigade and subsequently took part in Op Haven in Northern Iraq. This was followed by a return to the MoD before taking command of 45
Commando Group. In 1997, in the rank of brigadier, he became the Director Naval Staff in the MoD, after which he took over command of 3 Commando Brigade and deployed to Kosovo (CBE).

He was appointed Commandant General Royal Marines in 2001; a year later he took up the new and concurrent job of Commander United Kingdom Amphibious Forces, in which capacity he deployed as the UK Maritime Component Commander for operations in the Gulf, completing a novel double of command of both land and maritime forces at formation level. He assumed the post of Chief of Staff at the PJHQ in May 2002 and remained in the job throughout the planning for and conduct of operations against Iraq. He took over the job of Director of Operations in the MoD in July 2003 (KCB) which was followed by a final operational tour as Deputy Commanding General of coalition forces in Iraq (US Legion of Merit).

As Director of Operations in the Ministry of Defence, he was responsible for the military strategic direction of the UK response to 9/11 and briefed to the Cabinet in session and successive Prime Ministers in private. His operational experience covers all the major theatres of recent times, both conventional and non-conventional.
Sir Robert is a prize winning essayist and has been widely published internationally; he is a Visiting Professor at Reading University and a visiting fellow at Oxford. He is married to Liz and they have two daughters. He maintains his military links as Colonel, the Special Reconnaissance Regiment and is a Freeman of the City of London.

Patent Filing Strategies in Japan: How to Achieve an Edge over your Competitors

Patent Filing Strategies in Japan: How to Achieve an Edge over your Competitors Felix-Reinhard Einsel Vice Representative, Sonderhoff & Einsel Law and Patent Office

It has long been known that Japanese companies… …worldwide generally apply for far more patents than most European companies. The disparity seems to have progressively grown, particularly in Japan itself where recent changes in the filing strategies of European companies have sought to deliberately reduce the number of their Japanese applications even more.

The purpose of this meeting… …is to both discuss the reasons behind this phenomenon and to propose filing techniques that can afford European companies greater competitiveness in the Japanese market.

Join us at this informative event hosted by Felix-Reinhard Einsel, …an expert in his field. Mr. Einsel possesses a diverse undergraduate and postgraduate educational background in Comparative Law and Electrical Engineering from Japanese and American institutions. He is a member of the New York State Bar Association and the first ever European national to pass the Japanese Patent Attorneys Examination. He is also qualified in Japan as an IP Litigator. Mr. Einsel currently resides at Sonderhoff & Einsel Law and Patent Office (formerly Dr. Sonderhoff Law Office), where he began in 1995 and has been Managing Partner since 2009. His multifaceted theoretical and technical specializations have contributed greatly to his work, which is primarily dedicated to the representation of European companies in patent application and litigation matters.

Relative Stability or Total Confusion in Japanese Politics

Relative Stability or Total Confusion in Japanese Politics

INTRODUCTION

All political eyes are on the election to the upper house of the Diet to be held in July.

Following its landslide victory in the election to the lower house last year, will the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) be able to grab the 60 seats it needs to be in sole control of BOTH houses? Or, will the electorate confirm by the ballot what the opinion polls say it feels - betrayed by the government.

If so, no 60 seats, no control of the upper house and a byzantine political configuration with legislators changing parties, forming new parties, forming intra-party alliance.

The DPJ has steadily lost popular support since gaining power. But that loss has not been a gain for its rival, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).  Is the sentiment drifting away from the two major parties and on to a “third force”?  The answer will be revealed in July.

SPEAKERS

Mr Dan Harada, the only western member of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), has close ties and friendships with ministers, committee chairmen and the LDP leadership. Through his LDP membership and his connections, he has a unique insight into Japanese politics and is known also for his predictions and commentary on the Japanese political scene.

It was some 20 years ago, in 1987, when Mr Harada acquired Japanese citizenship, became a member of the LDP and founded Nagatacho Forum, a lobbying firm which assists foreign governments and companies in their relations with Japanese legislators.

Mr Harada, raised in Paris, also has experience in Wall Street where he worked first at Smith Barney, then later as assistant to John Pell, Chairman, Committee on Foreign Relations.

Making Sustainable Decisions in a World Driven by Short-term Targets

Dr. Malcolm McIntosh; Making Sustainable Decisions: What does it mean and why is it such a challenge?

This speech by Malcolm McIntosh seeks to reveal factors that influence formation of sustainable or unsustainable policies in the public and private sectors: which processes and approaches to policy-making that can address both short-term and long-term needs? How do time pressures, conflicting values, imprecise or contested data, and structural complexities influence sustainable outcomes? How different is decision-making in the public and private arenas?’ And ‘if so how?’ Further, ‘given the imperative for new global governance how can private and public decision-making work together for the common good?'

People who should attend

Anyone interested in corporate governance.

Policymaking in the public and private sectors seeks to satisfy both short-term and long-term demands. Managers in business are often encouraged, implicitly or explicitly, to concentrate on short-term profit over approaches which would bring more sustainable long-term success. Indeed, structural incentives for short-term returns on investments were a strong causative factor in the current financial crisis.

REAL ESTATE TIME TO BUY?

INTRODUCTION

Japanese property prices have plummeted since the late 1980s, when the land under the Imperial Palace in Tokyo was reportedly worth more than California. You can now buy a house on an acre of land for as little as US$30,000, and ski chalets in Hokkaido are cheaper -- and closer -- than those in Whistler or Vail. But is it the right time to buy? Author Christopher Dillon examines the demographic trends shaping Japan's real estate market and explains where to find financing, what not to buy and how to avoid risks that are unique to Japan.

SPEAKERS

CHRISTOPHER DILLON

Christopher Dillon is an award-winning writer and entrepreneur based in Hong Kong. In 2002, he bought and renovated a floor in an office building in Hong Kong’s Central business district. Since then, he has purchased and refurbished a luxury apartment on the west side of Hong Kong Island and transformed a derelict steam laundry into a multimedia studio.
That experience inspired his first book, Landed: The expatriate’s guide to buying and renovating property in Hong Kong, and a companion audiobook. In 2010, he published his second book, Landed: The guide to buying property in Japan. Christopher lived in Tokyo from 1989 to 1992 and travels to Japan regularly with his consulting business.

Golf: State of the Game

Golf: State of the Game

Paul Jones, Managing Director of ARENA

INTRODUCTION:
The Asia Pacific region represents the most exciting frontier for the growth of golf in the world. In fact, it is anticipated that currently this industry already represents more than $15 billion annually, and its pace of growth is exponential given the development of golf in China, South Korea, Vietnam, Southeast Asia and India.

However what is happening to Japanese golf? What measures are being taken to ensure the world’s 2nd largest golf economy is able to hold this position?

Come along and look at the State of The Game as it is;
  • Look at key trends including fashion and travel
  • Also the key ways golf can play into business, pleasure and lifestyle.
  • Finish of the evening with a dynamic session of golf instruction from two of Japan’s leaders, a look at both technical and physical training.
You do not even have had to play golf to come along and learn a lot more about the game of golf than you ever knew or perhaps expected.

SPEAKER:  Paul Jones

EXTRACT VALUE FROM CONSULTANTS: HOW TO HIRE, CONTROL, AND FIRE THEM

EXTRACT VALUE FROM CONSULTANTS:

HOW TO HIRE, CONTROL, AND FIRE THEM

SPECIAL BOOK SIGNING LUNCHEON

" Executives and managers may think they know how to manage consultants but this book reveals the reality. Those who read it will learn the why, how, and what they should demand from their consultants? future consultants watch out! "

Gary R. Bennett, EVP & Greater China CEO, New York Life International

INTRODUCTION

Too many consulting projects do not deliver expected business value!

All organizations use consultants at some point. Make the right choices about the consultants you hire and manage them well, and you will create immeasurable business value. Select the wrong consulting firm or neglect to manage them effectively, and business value will elude you. If you ever honestly evaluated the outcome of your projects relative to the original expectations, you would likely agree that you received underwhelming results from overwhelming fees.

At this luncheon event, the authors of the just released book, Extract Value from Consultants: How to Hire, Control, and Fire Them will present experiences, case studies, and key management principles to equip you to extract the promised value. Depending on your current or future consulting spend, your organization could realize benefits in the order of thousands to multi-millions of dollars from three sources:

1. Increased strategic and operational benefits from projects arising from more rigorous selection and management of consultants;

2. Reduced consulting spend because you are better equipped for contract negotiations and can configure the project team to be more cost-effective; and

3. Transfer of knowledge and capabilities to your own organization through more purposeful collaboration between your staff and the consultants.

Go ahead. Look in your local or online book store. There will be hundreds of books on how to be a consultant but no books written for executives or managers on how to effectively select and manage them. Consultants manage their clients every day but you, as an executive or manager with day-to-day operational responsibilities, only interact with consultants intermittently. So who do you really think has the advantage? The consultants of course. Is it not time that you 'even the odds' in your consulting relationships by attending this presentation?

Copies of the book will initially only be available for sale in Japan at this venue. For more information on the book please visit: www.ExtractValueFromConsultants.com

Private School Education in Canada: A Competative Advantage

Introduction

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Japan (CCCJ), in cooperation with the Canadian Alumni Association in Japan (CAAJ) and HSBC is pleased to host a presentation on "Private School Education in Canada: A Competitive Advantage"  by Mike Wolfe, headmaster of Stanstead College, one of Canada's leading boarding schools.  Mike has a wealth of experience in private/boarding school education, fund raising, corporate relations and community involvement and will provide us with an excellent overview of Canada's competitive advantage in private and boarding school education.

Speaker

Michael Wolfe is the headmaster of Stanstead College, a 137-year-old international co-educational boarding and day school for students in Grades 7 through 12 located in Quebec, Canada. Mr. Wolfe’s involvement with Stanstead College began in 1991 when he directed the school’s successful 21st Century Capital Campaign. In 1993, he returned to the College as director of development.

In 1995, Mr. Wolfe began a five-year term as vice-president at the Canadian Museum of Civilization Corporation, where he was responsible for the national campaign that raised $15 million for the new Canadian War Museum. As VP, he was also responsible for fundraising activities at the Canadian Museum of Civilization, the largest and most well-attended museum in Canada.

Mr. Wolfe’s other fundraising experience include campaigns at Branksome Hall in Toronto, Shawnigan Lake School in British Columbia, as well as Saint Mary’s University and Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

While at the Canadian War Museum, Mr. Wolfe remained an active member of the Stanstead College Board of Trustees, chairing the Development Committee and acting as vice-president of the school’s Red & White Foundation. In 2000, he was appointed executive director of ORBIS Canada, an international charity dedicated to preventing blindness in developing countries using the world’s only flying eye hospital.

In August 2002, Mr. Wolfe returned to Stanstead College as director of advancement and was appointed headmaster in 2005. Among his many other responsibilities at the school, he is currently involved in a $10 million capital campaign to increase endowment, build a new girls residence and construct new athletic facilities.

Among Mr. Wolfe’s priorities as headmaster has been an initiative to increase Stanstead College’s visibility with top-tier U.S. universities. In the spring of 2007, the school expanded its University Guidance Department by adding a specialist focusing exclusively on U.S. university admissions. Travelling to Ivy League and other top-tier U.S. universities, the specialist made direct and frequent contact with admission officers responsible for reading Canadian applications. This was followed up by taking select Stanstead students to tour some of these top U.S. schools. New advanced course offerings were added to the Stanstead curriculum and top students were encouraged and directed to Ivy League summer courses and seminars to broaden their exposure. Out of 46 graduating students in 2009, three students received a total of five offers from Harvard University, Stanford University, Brown University, Cornell University and Dartmouth College. There were also acceptances from top liberal arts colleges, including Williams College, Bowdoin College, Colgate University and Skidmore College as well as many top Canadian schools. Offers for the class of 2010 have only begun, but already a student from South Korea has been offered early admission to Cornell University.

Mr. Wolfe holds Bachelor of Arts and Master of Political Science degrees from the University of Western Ontario and a Master of Management degree from McGill University. He lives on the campus of Stanstead College with his wife Amy and their three children.

Social Media Marketing The Challenges and the Potential

Social Media Marketing

The Challenges and the Potential

Presented by

Neal Schaffer
Social Media Strategist, Speaker and Author

Introduction

A look at business successes and failures in the social media marketplace, and what companies can learn from them.
In the vast and growing global social media marketplace -- already more than half a billion people strong -- 'sharing' is synonymous with 'marketing', and brand owners are no longer in control of their brands. 'The people' can build up a brand's reputation overnight, or tear it down in an afternoon. How should companies establish and maintain a viable presence across the 'social graph' that will generate goodwill while leading to expanded market share and increased profits? The stakes are high: Companies can win big, suffer greatly, or fall somewhere in between. Neal Schaffer joins us from the United States to provide a look at some notable successes and failures as companies attempt to navigate their way through the online social media sphere consisting of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and more. He also offers advice on best practices and how a company can start creating a social media marketing strategy.

Speaker

Neal Schaffer is an internationally recognised social networking consultant who helps companies and individuals embrace social media for business and personal applications.  A passionate speaker, social media strategist, and author of "Windmill Networking: Understanding, Leveraging & Maximizing LinkedIn", he is also the creator of the Windmill Networking blog (www.windmillnetworking.com), a popular and trusted source for information on LinkedIn, the leading business networking site, as well as Twitter, social networking, and social media.

Fluent in Japanese and Mandarin Chinese and having nearly two decades of successful sales and business development experience in the technology industry in Asia, Neal Schaffer brings a unique perspective in helping businesses and professionals understand how to utilise social media, grounded in solid business logic.

 Take the Leap to
Independent Business

Your Guide to Creating a Company
&
Dealing with Tax

Introduction

Setting up your own company is the first step on the path to independent business success, yet so many fail to achieve even this first step.  This failure is usually not due to any lack of drive, but rather a lack of readily available clear information.

Are you contemplating setting up your own company but don't know where to start?  Are you unsure how to fill out tax forms, declare income and claim expenses?  Do you want to know the options available to individuals and entrepreneurs like yourself?  If so, this event is for you.

Actions speak louder than words, so rather than just talk about it we're going to show you how to do it.  In addition to a discussion of business establishment options and tax issues, you will be provided with:1. Examples of the documentation you need to set up your own company in Japan

 2. A breakdown and sample of tax return forms for independent business owners

This is an event you will not walk away from empty handed.

Bob Seelert, Leading in Tough Times

Introduction

In good times, true leadership skills are rarely tested to their limits. In tough times, leaders find out what they're really made of. There are very few people that have accumulated Bob Seelert's experiences including: periods of rapid growth & expansion, recessions, turnarounds, buy-outs on a national and international basis. Bob will share with us what it takes to be a great leader, particularly in tough times.

Bob will also be signing his new book Start with the Answer.

Speaker

Bob Seelert is one of the most senior executives to emerge into the troubled business landscape in 2009. His new book Start with the Answer is a back-to-basics primer for aspiring leaders - in business, in government, in education.

With two Harvard degrees and a 40 year career as a “Captain of Industry,” Bob Seelert has amassed a reputation as a turnaround expert, reviving the fortunes of businesses and brands in the and internationally.

For the past 12 years Seelert has been the Chairman of Saatchi & Saatchi, one of the world’s leading creative ideas companies. His journey from small-town to being CEO of five companies in three different industries, and a member of the board of directors of nine companies in the , and , reads like a script for “The Great American Success Story.”  It began with his decision to “take a flyer” and apply to  CollegeHarvard in 1960.

After graduating he went on to  Business SchoolHarvard and then a 23 year career with General Foods Corporation, one of the premier companies of its time in . He held 17 different roles and positions across the organization, initially in sales and marketing and then general management, eventually becoming President and CEO of Worldwide Coffee and International Foods. He closely observed one of the biggest mega-mergers in corporate history, the acquisition of General Foods by Philip Morris in 1985.

In the early nineties Seelert led turnaround operations at Topco, a grocery industry co-operative, and Kayser Roth, a leading U.S. manufacturer of leg wear that operated as a joint venture of the Blackstone Group and Wasserstein-Perella.

In 1995 he was recruited as the high-profile CEO to lead Cordiant, the UK-based holding company that had been formed following the dramatic shareholder revolt at the London-based Saatchi & Saatchi. He became Chairman in 1997 after hiring Kevin Roberts as CEO, moved the headquarters to , and together they re-built and re-focused the company as a potent ideas company working with many of the world’s leading corporations and brands. In 2000 Seelert concluded a merger of Saatchi & Saatchi with the Publicis Groupe of at a share price that was 450% higher than the starting level. The company has improved its financial performance every year since, and in 2008 Saatchi & Saatchi had its best year in the history of the company.FranceNew York

Hard Won Lessons in
Building High Performance Teams in Japan

presented by
Stefan Lippert

Introduction

One of the biggest challenges for international firms in Japan is the build-up of a Japanese team that effectively handles domestic business relationships while at the same time integrates smoothly into the global organisation of the company. This presentation will provide you with an insight into the strategies international companies adopt to build high performance teams. In addition, an overview of some management education tools companies are investing in to foster the 21st century global leader will be introduced.

Speaker

He teaches MBA and executive classes at the Kenichi Ohmae Graduate School of Business in Tokyo and at other business schools in Japan and overseas. A true renaissance man of music, Robert Ryker has conducted orchestras all over the world from Boston to Bucharest, and from Kiev to Nagoya. In his career he has established three orchestras in Canada, India and the latest in Japan – The Tokyo Sinfonia in 2005. Tokyo Sinfonia, a 19-piece string orchestra delivers a series of symphony concerts featuring of the music or well-known composers, Mozart, Dvorak, Shubert, etc, at the prestigious Oji Hall in Ginza. Additionally, the orchestra regularly performs its unique dinner concert series at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan focusing on the music of a particular country and featuring its national cuisine.

However, an orchestra is fundamentally a business and as Maestro Ryker points out, the three main components of an orchestra - the musicians, the music and the audience are the equivalent of employees, products/services and customers. So inspiring and developing people, adapting products to the market tastes and satisfying customers so that they will come back for more, are all business skills that a conductor must focus on all of the time.

In a downturn, these are critical issues for managers everywhere and in the presentation Robert Ryker will share unique insights from his perspective of business unusual including:

- Loyalty counts whether it’s musicians or your key staff
- Motivating staff to perform with creativity and commitment
- The importance of a Mission and delivering with Passion

- Using your personal style to connect with your audience /customers
- Softening your image and satisfying your clients
- Putting an orchestra to work for your business!
- Innovative ideas for making music a business tool that works for you

This presentation will certainly give you food for thought on unusual and creative business approaches during a downturn.

  • How do Ontario’s focus on green cars and the Green Energy Act just introduced by the Ontario government affect you and your company?

  • How has the global financial crisis impacted Ontario’s economy?

  • How is the government helping make the auto industry healthy again?

Minister Pupatello returns to Tokyo once more to share her insights and initiatives on fostering Japan-Ontario collaboration.

During her last visit to Japan – exactly two years ago – Minister Pupatello met with Chamber members. She told our group about new investments in Ontario and new opportunities for Japan and Ontario to collaborate for success.

Since that time, Sandra Pupatello has continued her tireless efforts to attract international investment to Ontario as the recently appointed Minister of International Trade and Investment (MITI). Minister Pupatello and her team are dedicated to bringing high-value jobs to Ontario, where the province’s international reputation continues to be strong as the home for multinationals who recognize Ontario’s strengths as the place to make world-class products for global markets.

Ms. Pupatello was first elected to the riding of Windsor West in 1995. She has also served in the Government of Ontario as Minister of Education, Minister of Community and Social Services, Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues, and Minister of Economic Development and Trade. In January 2009, Ms. Pupatello was presented with the Award of Excellence in Community Service by The Canadian-Italian Business and Professional Association in Windsor.

The first global economic and financial crisis represents a watershed in people's thinking and in economic policy. Countries are threatened by recession, if not a full-scale depression. However, the current crisis is not the only challenge though it is certainly the most pressing. Demographic change, emerging economies, technological progress, climate change, scarce resources and the war for talent will present enormous challenges for governments and businesses – but possibly also huge opportunities.

Roland Berger is the most renowned European strategy consultant. His advice is sought by political leaders, international industry and service enterprises and public institutions — particularly in restructuring. He serves in various advisory boards including Deutsche Bank, Sony Corporation, and The Blackstone Group. He has also been appointed by the European Union to help eliminate bureaucracy.

Optimism in Pessimistic Times - How Emotional Intelligence Can Help

Time: 6:30-8:30 pm
Venue: Australian Embassy, B2F map (*Photo ID is required for entry and baggage check will be undertaken)

Price: 4,000 yen (Member's Guest 6,000 yen)

Guest Speaker: Joshua Rhodes & Quentin O'Mahony, Management Trainers at AMT Group

Pessimism is all around us, in the mass media, at dinner parties and even in our homes; a dark cloud of fear, doubt and loss of direction is seizing us with little hope of dissipating. It does not have to be this way. We are still capable of shaping our own future and now more than ever we need to ensure that future is a group effort. Defined simply as our ability to manage our relationships and ourselves effectively, Emotional Intelligence is an approach to human behaviour that is a measure for determining career and life success. Within this broad field optimism is a key component that research shows can extend our lives and manage adversity better than pessimism.

This presentation will include interactive lecture on the what, why, and how of Emotional Intelligence, a chance for participants to deepen their self awareness and improve optimism and tips on how we can practically apply these concepts during challenging times.

Joshua Rhodes, as a Management Trainer at AMT Group, has led workshops and coaching sessions in both English and Japanese for multi-national clients in the financial, IT, and consumer goods industries both in Tokyo and Hong Kong. He has also worked as an internal consultant for a leading investment bank's HR Department here in Tokyo. Josh also is a certified practitioner of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).

Quentin O'Mahony, or "Q", loves working with individuals and teams that want to develop themselves. He has developed and led workshops on Emotional Intelligence, team building and conflict resolution with AMT Group for 8 years in locations that range from Thailand to Cuba.

This event will be organized by the ANZCCJ and held in cooperation with the CCCJ.

HIGH STAKES – What Lies Ahead for the Global Economy?

Time: 8:45 am -2:15 pm
Venue: Westin Harbour Castle Convention Centre (Toronto, Canada) map

Price: $262.50 CND

The Japan Society (Canada) is hosting a Symposium on the most important issue facing the world in 2009 - the global economic crisis.  While the United States, Canada and many other countries have authorized significant stimulus programmes, it seems clear to many learned economists and policy pundits around the world that the steps taken and planned to date are insufficient to meet the global needs.  Indeed, the crisis is endemic and, for the first time in the post-war era, the United States will need assistance from all developed countries, including Canada and Japan, to ease its and their way out of this economic and financial maelstrom.

The speakers are amongst the most knowledgeable available and will provide views and comments from the perspectives of Japan, Europe, and Canada. One speaker, Martin Wolf, the noted economic correspondent of the Financial Times of London wrote in a recent edition of his column on this issue as follows:

Decisions taken in the next few months will shape the world for a generation.  If we get through the crisis without collapse, we will have the time and the chance to construct a better and more stable global order.   If we do not, that opportunity may not recur for decades.  We are living on the cusp of history.   The priority is to reverse the downward spiral of despair through overwhelming and concerted action.   That will only occur if the US now gives the leadership we need.

The purpose in presenting this Symposium is to provide a context for considering of this explosive issue, to outline the factors and policies relevant to its solution, to stimulate discussion and debate around this topic and to act as a catalyst to a broadening global awareness of the central issues and policy solutions.  It will be an exceptional conference on a subject that is of overriding interest to each and every one of us, both personally and collectively.

Venue: Australian Embassy, B2 map

Price: 5,600 yen (Members's Guest 7,000 yen)

Guest Speaker: Tommy Kullberg, Kullberg & Partners KK, Chairman

Most foreign companies are trading far below their international market shares in Japan - still the second largest market in the world for most business segments.  Over the years many companies have made costly mistakes and even completely withdrawn from the market.  The Swedish company IKEA was one of them, closing down two stores in 1986.  Carrefour, the second largest retailer in the world, withdrew from the Japanese market in 2004.  What are the common mistakes we insistently keep on making?  What are the main regulatory issues we are facing and what can we do to remove them?

At this event we are once again honoured to welcome Mr Tommy Kullberg, newly elected Chairman of the European Business Council (EBC), H & M Hennes & Mauritz Board Member, and Kullberg & Partners KK Chairman & Representative Director.  Mr Kullberg will reflect on the IKEA and H & M market entries and share his experiences in successful business development in Japan, applicable to virtually any business segment.

This will be a unique opportunity to gain new insights on how to accelerate your company’s growth in Japan. To know more about Mr. Kullberg, click here for his bio.

This event will be organized by the Australian and New Zealand Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan (ANZCCJ) and held in cooperation with the BCCJ and CCCJ.

From Crisis to Opportunity: Japan in the New Global Economic Order

Time: 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Venue: The Westin Tokyo, Star Room B2

Price: Members 7,875 yen (Member's Guest 8,925 yen)

Guest Speaker: Mr. Jesper Koll, Tantallon Research Japan K.K.

Japan has what it takes to emerge a winner from the global crisis... a powerful technology base, low financial leverage, huge savings and a diligent labour force that can easily compete with almost any global competitor. Against this, a massive fiscal deficit, very adverse demographics and fragmented policy making threaten to pull Japan back to domestic stagnation. Which force will win? Where are the industries and companies that will take the lead? How can your company benefit from the emerging global economic order and Japan’s force in it?

Jesper Koll has been a leading Japan strategist and investor since becoming a Japan resident in 1986. Before setting up his own consultancy in 2007, he was the chief economist for Merrill Lynch and JP Morgan. He has been a member of several government advisory councils, amongst them Prime Minister Koizumi’s Economic Task Force and the Ministry of Finance Council on Global Capital Flows.

This event will be organized by the German Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Japan. CCCJ members can attend at member rates.

We thank you for your interest in this event which is now sold out. Registration is now closed.

Environmental Innovation: How Fujitsu is leading IT industries

Time: 12:00 - 2:00 p.m.
Venue: City Club of Tokyo

Price: Members 6,000 yen (Member's Guest 7,000 yen)

Guest Speaker: Mr. Naoyuki Akikusa, a board member and former chairman of Fujitsu Limited

The environment and especially global warming, is one of the biggest issues for us in the 21st century. Current world affairs focus on the importance of supporting the prevention of global warming. Discussions at the Toyako Summit (Hokkaido) in July included the need to reduce CO2 exhaust by the year 2050. On the other hand, in order to maintain economic growth while reducing CO2 exhaust by half is a difficult challenge. Innovation will be required in technology, markets, institutions and our every day life.

ICT (Information and Communication Technology) plays an important role in innovation. At the economic forum meeting in Davos this year, attendees agreed that the amount of the ICT industry’s CO2 exhaust should occupy 2 percent of all industries; however, ICT innovation may be able to help reduce emissions beyond this amount.

Mr. Naoyuki Akikusa, former President of Fujitsu Limited, will speak about the ICT industry and Fujitsu's dedication to its industry as well as the relation between global warming and ICT. Join us for the special opportunity to hear how one of
Japan’s largest companies is addressing the important issue of the environment.

This event will be held in cooperation with the Australian and New Zealand Chamber of Commerce in Japan (ANZCCJ) and the British Chamber of Commerce in Japan (BCCJ).
